Charles Woodrow “Woody” Latimer, age 90, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Woody was born on September 4, 1935, to William Roscoe Latimer and Agnes Mona Forrest Latimer and grew up at Halls Creek in Humphreys County, TN. He was a member of the Waverly Church of Christ for most of his life. He lived life to the fullest and will be sorely missed.
Woody was a graduate of Waverly Central High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Once honorably discharged from the Army, he moved to Michigan where he began working for L&N Railroad. This began his lifelong career in railroading in Michigan and then later in Tennessee. “Charlie”, as he was known by his railroad buddies, spent 30 years working as a fireman, brakeman, and finally railroad engineer. He served as the local and state representative for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE).
Woody loved to golf and spent much of his retired life on the golf course with his wife of 60 years, Roberta Ruth Bone Latimer. They went on many golfing trips with family and friends to North Carolina and Florida. He also enjoyed watching his favorite hockey team, the Nashville Predators, was a season ticket holder, and loved to take others with him to enjoy the games. During his later years, Woody and Roberta moved to Huntsville, Alabama to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Woody is survived by his wife, Roberta; daughters, Rhonda Coffelt, Valerie Cox (Gerry); grandchildren, Matthew Lane, Kelby Cox (Daniel Necaise), Baylee Hedges (Gunter) and Carter Cox (Blakely); and numerous nieces and nephews that he visited regularly and loved dearly.
Woody chose to be cremated so his remains could be buried at the Hillcrest Cemetery with the Latimer family and the Bone Cemetery with his wife and their family. Memorial services will be held on January 10, 2026, at the Humphreys County Funeral Home to celebrate a life well lived. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at noon. His cremains will be interred at Hillcrest Cemetery immediately after the service.
