Martha Jean Smith

Mrs. Martha Jean Cable Smith, age 94, of McEwen, TN passed away at the home of her daughter, Cindy, in Antioch, TN on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of the Mount Zion community in McEwen, TN. She was united in marriage with Walter Robert “Pappy” Smith, who preceded her in death after 51 years of marriage.

As an avid gardener and horticulturist, Mrs. Smith loved growing flowers of all kinds on her ancestral farm, particularly roses. She enjoyed growing fruit trees and she fed her expanding family and circle of friends out of her large vegetable garden. She strove to grow the most perfect tomatoes every summer and canned endless gallons of fresh tomato juice. She also loved to fish. Her hospitality was well known. Her visitors were always fed and entertained with endless cups of coffee, laughter and a good story, lifting many hearts in her presence.

When asked what her most important gifts in life were, Mrs. Smith would say, “My family is the best I have to give to the world. I gave them the best I could. My children are my sunshine.”

Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00pm Friday, August 22nd and from 11:00am until service time Saturday, August 23rd at Humphreys County Funeral Home.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Smith will be conducted at 1:00pm Saturday, August 23, 2025, in the Humphreys County Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. William Brown officiating.

Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in McEwen, TN.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband; parents, Isaac Columbus Cable and Betty Ann Dugger Cable; five brothers, Boone, Glen, Thomas, David and Frank Cable; sisters, Jane Cable Hooper, Beulah Cable Hooper, Freda Cable Weeks and Molly Cable Hooper; and grandson, Kenneth Woodruff.

She is survived by her daughters, Bobbie Jean Smith Pittman of Greenbriar, TN and Cynthia Smith Currey (James) of Antioch, TN; son, Pat Smith (Cheryl) of Waverly, TN; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 3 great, great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oak Grove Cemetery Fund, 2182 Mt. Zion Road, McEwen, TN, 37101.
