Sam Bruce Whatley, Jr.

Mr. Sam Bruce Whatley, Jr., age 68

Of New Johnsonville, TN passed away Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He was born on October 12, 1958, in Plattsburgh, New York to Sam Sr. and Alice Whatley.

Sam proudly served in the United States Air Force as a Munitions Systems Specialist (AMMO), a chapter of his life that reflected his dedication and commitment to serving his country.

A man of many talents and passions, Sam had a deep love for building houses, which grew into a career in construction spanning more than 40 years. He was also a true cowboy at heart, with a special love for animals and a particular passion for breaking mustangs. When he wasn't working, Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing, and restoring furniture, always finding joy in working with his hands and creating something lasting.

Sam never met a stranger. He loved meeting people, sharing stories, and making connections wherever life took him. His warmth, personality, and gift for storytelling left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

Above all else, Sam's greatest love was his family. He cherished them deeply, including not only those connected by blood but also the many special people he met along life's journey who became family in every way that mattered. His love knew no boundaries, and the family he built through friendship and kindness was one of his greatest legacies.

Sam will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his cowboy heart, his love of adventure, his stories, and, most importantly, the love he gave so freely to his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy built not only with his hands, but with the many lives he touched along the way.

Mr. Whatley’s wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
