Traci Chaney Jones, 56, of Athens, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, surrounded by the love of her family following a courageous journey through illness. Though her path was marked by unimaginable challenges, she met each day with grace, quiet strength, unwavering faith, and a courage that inspired everyone privileged to walk beside her.
Born on June 23, 1970, in Clinton, Indiana, Traci was the beloved daughter of the late Ron Chaney and Vicki (Lunstrum Chaney) Work. As a young child, she moved with her family to Tennessee, where she lived in New Johnsonville before settling in Waverly. She graduated from Waverly Central High School and later returned to Indiana to pursue her lifelong passion for healthcare, earning her degree in Radiologic Technology from Ivy Tech Community College.
For more than 35 years, Traci dedicated her life to caring for others through healthcare. She built an exceptional career in radiology, where she became known not only for her expertise but also for her willingness to mentor and encourage others entering the profession. Affectionately known by many coworkers as “Dr. Traci,” she earned the admiration and respect of everyone fortunate enough to work beside her. Later in her career, she transitioned into healthcare information technology, serving as a Senior Applications Support Analyst with CereCore after previously working with Community Health Systems and GE Healthcare.
A woman of deep faith, Traci was a member of First United Methodist Church in Waverly, Tennessee.
Her generous heart and joyful spirit touched everyone she met. She found happiness in life’s simple blessings—walking along the beach, shopping, her puppy dogs, celebrating holidays with family, and making memories with the people she loved most. Above all, her greatest joy was loving her family. Whether by birth, by marriage, or by life’s beautiful blessings, she embraced each person with an open heart. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and treasured friend. Slevin, her son, was the center of her world.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ron Chaney; her grandparents, Dorothy Shannon, Bill Lunstrum, Rose Lunstrum; Mary Lou Lunstrum; and her uncle, Ed Chaney.
Left to cherish her memory are her partner in life and husband, Jay Jones; her beloved son, Slevin Jones; her parents, Vicki (Lunstrum) and Melvin Work; her bonus mother, Mary Chaney; her siblings, Jessica (Chaney) Cremer and Doug Chaney; her bonus children, Christopher (Taylor) Jones and Bryanna Wells-Coffey; her cherished grandchildren, Gabriellia (Gabby), Clark and Creed, and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
She also shared an especially close bond with her cousins, Jennifer Boyer, Beckey Maloney, Terri Walters, and Jaime Lunstrum - whose lifelong love and friendship were among her greatest blessings.
Traci had a way of making people feel seen and cared for. Whether she was sharing her knowledge with a coworker, planning a family beach trip, or simply laughing with those she loved, she gave of herself wholeheartedly. Her greatest accomplishments were never found in her career, but in the love she poured into her husband, son, family, and friends.
While her family grieves her absence, they find comfort in knowing she is now whole, embraced by the peace of her Savior, and reunited with those who went before her. Though God had called her home far sooner than we wanted, Traci leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, compassion, and unwavering love.
To those who knew and loved her, the night sky will never look quite the same. One star now shines a little brighter—a reminder that love does not end with goodbye. Her light will continue to guide, comfort, and live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
